Article in the Daily Telegraph 29th April which is well worth a read and is so very true:AFTER just a few games as a junior soccer referee and 17-year-old Jess Swandling was quite prepared to throw in the towel.
Abuse from players and the sidelines had sapped her desire to contribute to the sport she loves.
"The abuse was bad ... it was almost too much," Jess said yesterday.
"I've had the coach run on the field and tell me off. I've heard of girls being followed to their cars by angry players or coaches after they've refereed."
Abuse drives away more than 60 first-year referees from her Granville District Association every season and Jess was almost another statistic.
But with a mentoring system in place and constant support from senior referees within her association, she learned to ignore the verbal battering.

Great story to encourage other young referees to stick with it and take each hurdle as it comes and keep pushing on to accomplish personal satisfaction knowing you have helped the community.
