hi guys long time no speak! i have a concern about how some referees are interpreting the zero tolerance for swearing situation, and whether or not it exists? I was involved in a game on the weekend where a referee sent off 2 players for swearing (and 3 in the 3 o clock game) , that I believe were completely avoidable. now these guys get 4 weeks suspension for saying one word in frustration, not in any way directed at anyone. In comparison a player can make a terrible tackle with intention to harm, be sent off and come back in 2-3 weeks. I believe there needs to be some sort of common sense approach taken as players pay good money in fees to play, and frustration is unavoidable in a lot of circumstances. sending off a player for swearing in the 5th minute sets a dangerous precedence for the remaining 85 minutes. what are your thoughts on this guys?

The laws of the game state that a red card should be issued when a player, 'uses offensive or insulting or abusive language and/or gestures'. Referees try to be consistent but inevitably there may be occasions when what seems abusive to one ref may not be deemed to be abusive by another.
A recent memo from FNSW states: 'match officials have been instructed to dismiss from the field of play any player and/or club official who uses any form of unacceptable language which is audible to the spectators or match officials.'
Again what is unacceptable to one ref may be acceptable to another. There are however certain cases where it should be obvious to everybody that a red card is the right action.
The easy solution is for coaches to instruct all players never to swear under any circumstances. This removes any doubt on this issue and it should surely not be that difficult! Presumably most players do not swear in front of their children, mothers, grandmothers, and wives (or do they?)

As an interesting aside comment, when I was a player I was only ever sent off once when I said (in what I thought was a jocular manner), 'Have you left your specs at home today ref?'.
He sent me off for insulting language. I thought it a bit harsh at the time but I never said anything like that to a ref again!
