It seems common sense has prevailed and we are now instructed to come back into line with FIFA and AFC and use the right hand for signalling goal kicks and offsides.
A memo has just been issued from FFA as follows:
Following recent discussions with AFC and FIFA officials, all Assistant Referees are to use the right hand to signal goal kicks and offsides as in accordance with FIFA’s Laws of the Game.
For the avoidance of doubt this means using the right hand to signal for goal kick and offside decisions.
Development materials will be modified to ensure they follow FIFA’s requirements in this regard. For a copy of the FFA Memo click on the link below:gdsra.com.au/Memo_Instructions_for_Assistant_Referees_The_Use_of_Hands.pdfPlease ensure that you go back to using your right hand for signalling offside and goal kicks as per FIFA LOTG. Thanks for the info Direstraits. To use the right hand the same as the rest of the football world is the sensible decision.
It is unfortunate that many of our members have now just become accustomed again to using the left hand and we are now changing them back.
This season I have actually stopped instructing my ARs which hand to use because there are more important issues to concentrate upon but now we have settled on the right hand I will make sure that I encourage it. Although players and spectators may not notice, it does look sloppy (especially to another ref) when you see different ARs using different hands even in the same game.
FFA should really have got their act together before now but at least they got it right in the end. Hope to see A League ARs coming into line in the new season.
