I'm just wondering why a referee would deliberately tell their assistants to run the wrong diagonal during a game.
I watched a game yesterday where the assistants were on the wrong line and when a penalty was taken because the 1st year assistant didn't know where to stand he/she stood at the corner flag and where the referee then stood obstructed the view of the assistant.
It's not the first time I have seen this happen and I'm wondering why this referee prefers his assistants on the different diagonal than anyone else.
Maybe someone can enlighten me.

refsmum,
There are no right or wrong diagonal for assistant referees however one is far more common than the other. If the referees or ARs don't mind it and think it would not cause confusion there is no reason that they can't use the uncommon diagonal.
Having said that your case, from your description of the PK, it may have been a case of inexperienced center as well as inexperienced ARs.
Being an inexperienced referee myself, i can tell you that we have many thing to learn and unfortunately sometimes we can realise that there is a better way of doing certain things only after making a mistakes. In the case of the PK he would get the point of standing on the opposite side to the AR when he misses a signal form his AR.

Thanks for the reply Fairplay.
I just find it interesting that for the 6 years I have been on the sidelines as a parent of a junior referee there is only 1 referee in Granville that puts his assistants on the different diagonal.
Good to hear from you Smivvy and it has been a while. I think we are overdue a visit from you and your good wife. Any plans in the pipeline?

Yes it is always hard if you run the opposite diagonal because most referees are used to their positioning when using the conventional means of running. However, no problems using it if the ground conditions dictate that it is the best option.

Another point also worth noting: it is the resposibility of the appointed referee to decide which diagonal his ARs work.
If club ground staff have a preference because of pitch wear, they are able to make a recomendation to the referee who then decides which end of the pitch his ARs will work. If the ref and his ARs are happier with the usual end, they are perfectly able to adhere to that choice.
